What is it?

The whale shark is the biggest fish in the entire ocean โ€” it can grow up to 12 metres long, which is about the length of a school bus. Despite its enormous size, it is completely harmless to people because it feeds only on tiny floating creatures called plankton. Every year, whale sharks visit the waters near Belize's Gladden Spit reef to feed on coral spawn.

Whale sharks are not actually related to whales โ€” they are fish, which means they breathe through gills. They got their name because they are as big as a whale. They are covered in a pattern of white dots and stripes on dark grey skin, and each whale shark has a unique pattern, just like a fingerprint.

Every spring around the full moon, the coral on Gladden Spit spawns โ€” releasing millions of tiny eggs into the water in a sparkling cloud. Whale sharks gather to swim through these clouds with their enormous mouths wide open, filtering out the eggs. It is one of the most spectacular natural events in the entire ocean.

Swimming alongside a whale shark feels unbelievable โ€” you are next to a creature bigger than a bus, but it glides past so peacefully and gently that it is not frightening at all. Local dive guides in Belize know exactly when and where to take snorkellers to have the best chance of an encounter.

Whale sharks travel enormous distances across the oceans and are considered a vulnerable species, which means scientists work hard to track and protect them. Belize protects Gladden Spit as a marine reserve partly to ensure these gentle giants can always return to feed.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Whale sharks are enormous but completely harmless to people. How does that change the way you think about sharks in general?
  2. 02Why might the full moon be important for coral spawning? What do you think connects the two?
  3. 03Belize protects Gladden Spit as a marine reserve. What might happen to the whale sharks if this place was not protected?

Classroom activity

Measure out 12 metres in the school playground using a tape measure. That is how long a whale shark can be! Mark the head and tail with chalk. Now stand inside the outline and imagine it is swimming around you. Write a paragraph about how it felt.
