What is it?

Chimpanzees are large, clever apes that live in the forests of Guinea, including on the slopes of Mount Nimba. They are our closest animal relatives โ€” we share about 98% of our DNA with them. Chimpanzees live in social groups, communicate with sounds and gestures, and even use simple tools, making them one of the most fascinating animals on Earth.

A group of chimpanzees is called a community and can have anywhere from 20 to 150 members. Within the community, chimps have friendships, look after each other and even comfort friends who are upset โ€” just like humans do with people they care about.

Chimpanzees in Guinea are famous for their tool use. They select flat stones to use as hammers and crack hard-shelled nuts on flat rock 'anvils'. Young chimpanzees watch their mothers do this for years before they learn the skill themselves. Scientists call this cultural learning โ€” the same kind of learning that happens when children watch adults and copy them.

Their diet includes fruit, leaves, nuts, seeds and insects. They also love honey and will use a long stick to poke into a beehive and then lick the honey off. Their hands are very similar to human hands โ€” they have thumbs and can grip things very precisely.

Chimpanzees communicate using a rich variety of sounds โ€” hoots, screams, grunts and barks โ€” as well as facial expressions and hand gestures. Researchers have identified dozens of different calls that seem to mean different things in different situations.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Chimpanzees learn to crack nuts by watching their mothers โ€” not by being told what to do. What skills have you learned just by watching someone else?
  2. 02We share 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees. Does that surprise you? What do you think that number means?
  3. 03Why is it important to protect the forests of Guinea so that chimpanzees have a safe place to live?
  4. 04If chimpanzees comfort friends who are upset, what does that tell us about their feelings?

Classroom activity

Write a 'Day in the Life' story from a young chimpanzee's point of view in the forests of Mount Nimba. Include waking up, finding food, watching your mother crack nuts, playing with a friend, and going to sleep in a nest. Illustrate one moment from your story.
