The stone bridge in Prizren is one of the most recognised images in the whole country. It is arched and made of carefully shaped stones that were fitted together without any cement โ just pure skill. The bridge is so old that nobody is quite sure exactly when it was first built, but historians believe it may have stood in some form for over five hundred years.
Above the old town sits a large fortress on a hilltop called Kalaja. From its walls you can look down over all the red-tiled roofs, minarets and bell towers below. It feels like you are standing in a painting. The fortress has been repaired and is now a wonderful place to walk around and look out across the valley.
Every summer Prizren hosts the Dokufest documentary film festival, which you can read about in the Festivals section. The whole city fills with film-lovers, music, and outdoor screenings. The stone bridge and the riverbank become one big outdoor cinema and meeting place.
The streets of the old town are full of small workshops where craftspeople make copper objects, leather shoes, silver jewellery and filigree โ incredibly fine threads of metal twisted into delicate shapes. Many families have been doing these crafts for generations.
