Yaren District

The capital of the world's smallest island republic

What is it?

Yaren is the capital district of Nauru and the centre of the country's government and community life. Unlike most world capitals, Yaren is not a big, bustling city — it is a quiet, friendly place where everyone tends to know everyone else. Nauru is one of the smallest republics in the world, and Yaren fits that perfectly.

Tell me more

Nauru is divided into fourteen districts, and Yaren is in the south-west of the island. It has the country's parliament building, its main government offices, and the Nauru International Airport — where planes land on a short runway right next to the ocean. The airport is so close to the water that arriving passengers can sometimes spot fish in the lagoon from the plane window.

The parliament of Nauru has eighteen seats and meets in a modest, modern building. Nauruan democracy means that every citizen's voice counts, and community meetings and local discussions are an important part of island life.

Yaren is home to the Civic Centre and some of Nauru's schools. Life in the district moves at a gentle pace — children walk to school, families share meals outdoors, and neighbours stop to chat. In a country this size, community is everything.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Most capital cities are huge and busy. What might be nice about living in a quiet small-town capital like Yaren?
  2. 02Nauru's parliament has 18 members. How does that compare to the parliament or congress of your country?
  3. 03In a tiny community where everyone knows each other, how might people solve problems differently from people in a big city?

Classroom activity

Design a simple map of a made-up tiny island capital. Include: the parliament building, one school, the airport, a market, and a beach. Label each place and draw roads connecting them. How far apart would everything be if the whole island is only 21 km²?
