What is it?

Apia is the capital city of Samoa and home to about 40,000 people. It sits on the northern coast of Upolu beside a beautiful natural harbour. Apia has colourful markets, a famous clock tower, a grand fale-shaped parliament building, and churches on almost every corner.

The heart of Apia is the busy Fugalei Market, where farmers and fishermen bring their produce every day. You can buy fresh taro, papaya, coconuts, tropical fish, and colourful Samoan fabrics called puletasi. The market smells of ripe fruit and fresh flowers, and the stalls are packed with colour.

One of the most recognisable landmarks in Apia is the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, a large white church that can be seen from the harbour. There is also the famous clock tower in the town centre, which was given to Samoa as a gift. Many buildings in Apia are painted in bright tropical colours.

Apia has a relaxed pace compared to big cities in other countries. Many offices close early on Fridays. On Sunday mornings, the whole city becomes very quiet as families attend church, which is an important part of Samoan life. In the afternoon, the waterfront promenade fills with people enjoying the sea breeze.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Apia's parliament is shaped like a traditional house. Why might a country choose to design important buildings using traditional shapes?
  2. 02What is your town or city's most recognisable landmark? What makes something a 'landmark'?
  3. 03In Apia, Sunday is a rest day when the city goes quiet. How is that similar to or different from weekends where you live?

Classroom activity

Draw and label a simple tourist map of Apia. Include at least five landmarks or interesting places (you can look them up or invent them). Add a compass rose, a scale, and a colour key. What symbols will you use for a church, a market, and a beach?
