Vallnord and Grandvalira Ski Resorts

Two giant playgrounds in the snow

What is it?

Andorra has two big ski resorts — Grandvalira and Vallnord — that together cover hundreds of kilometres of slopes. People travel from all over Europe to ski and snowboard here every winter. Because Andorra sits high in the Pyrenees, the snow is usually excellent and the season lasts from December right into April.

Grandvalira is one of the biggest ski areas in southern Europe. It has over 200 kilometres of marked ski runs, which means you could ski a different route every day for a whole holiday and still not try them all. Beginners get gentle, wide slopes, while expert skiers can tackle steep black runs that drop down the mountain sides.

Vallnord is a bit smaller but very popular with families and with people who love mountain biking in summer, when the snow melts and the lifts carry cyclists and their bikes up the mountain instead of skiers. The lifts themselves are fun — open chairlifts swing you high above the tree line with views for miles in every direction.

Many Andorran children learn to ski as soon as they can walk. Schools sometimes take whole year groups up the mountain for ski lessons as part of the normal school timetable. Because the resorts are so close to where people live — sometimes just a short drive — it is a very normal part of everyday winter life, a bit like swimming lessons might be for children near a coast.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01If your school offered ski lessons the way Andorran schools do, what do you think you would enjoy most about it?
  2. 02How does a ski resort need to change between winter (for skiing) and summer (for biking and hiking)? List as many things as you can.
  3. 03Why do you think people travel a long way from other countries just to visit a ski resort?

Classroom activity

Design a 'mountain resort poster' for one season of your choice (winter or summer). Include at least four activities visitors can do, a catchy slogan, and a simple map showing where the mountain is. Share your poster with the class and take a vote on which season sounds most fun.
