What is it?

The African manatee is a large, slow-moving animal that lives in rivers, lagoons and coastal waters along western Africa, including Angola. It is sometimes called a 'sea cow' because it spends its day grazing on water plants. Manatees are gentle and curious, and completely harmless to people.

Tell me more

African manatees can grow up to three metres long and weigh as much as 500 kilograms โ€” heavier than a grand piano. Despite their size, they move slowly and gracefully through the water, propelling themselves with a large paddle-shaped tail. They come to the surface every few minutes to breathe air.

Manatees have no natural predators and spend most of their time eating water plants, grasses and even fallen fruits floating on the river surface. They use their flexible lips almost like fingers to grab and stuff plants into their mouths. A manatee can eat up to 8% of its body weight every single day.

In Angola, manatees are found in some of the country's coastal lagoons and river mouths. They are shy and often heard before they are seen โ€” making a quiet snuffling sound as they surface for air. Local fishermen sometimes spot them early in the morning when the water is still.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Manatees and elephants are actually distant relatives. What similarities can you spot between them?
  2. 02Why might a very large, slow animal need to eat such a huge amount of food every day?
  3. 03How could fishermen and manatees share the same rivers and lagoons safely?

Classroom activity

Draw an underwater scene showing an African manatee feeding on water plants in a river. Add what you think the riverbed, plants and other river creatures might look like. Write three facts as labels pointing to different parts of your manatee drawing.
