Angolan coastal communities have depended on the sea for food and livelihood for thousands of years. The Festa do Mar is a way of honouring that relationship ā giving thanks for the fish that feed families and asking for calm seas and safe journeys ahead. It is part prayer, part party.
On the day of the festival, fishing boats are dressed in ribbons, flowers and national colours. Fishermen and their families gather at the water's edge. There is music, dancing, and huge amounts of freshly cooked fish ā grilled, fried and baked ā shared among the whole community. The smell of the sea mixes with the scent of charcoal and cooking fish.
The festival also passes knowledge from one generation to the next. Older fishermen share stories of great catches and famous voyages. Children learn about the sea's moods and how to read the weather. Fishing songs that have been sung for generations ring out across the water, connecting the past to the present.
