Emerald Pool

A glittering green rock pool hidden deep in the rainforest

What is it?

Emerald Pool is a beautiful natural swimming pool tucked inside the rainforest of Morne Trois Pitons National Park. A small waterfall feeds the pool from above, and the water glows a bright green colour because of the moss, algae, and filtered sunlight that come through the jungle canopy overhead.

The walk to Emerald Pool is a short trail through some of the most lush forest on the island. Tree ferns taller than a house line the path, and the air is cool and damp with the sound of birds all around. The trail includes a wooden viewing platform where you can look out over the rainforest canopy to the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

The pool itself sits in a bowl of dark volcanic rock. The waterfall that feeds it drops about six metres โ€” about the height of two tall adults standing on each other's shoulders. Swimmers can stand under the waterfall for a natural shower, and the water is refreshingly cool even on the hottest day.

Emerald Pool gets its vivid green colour from tiny plants โ€” mosses and algae โ€” that grow on the rocks under the water and around the edges. When sunlight filters through the forest leaves above and hits the water, it makes the green glow even brighter. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the light comes through the canopy in long golden beams.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Why do you think the pool looks green rather than blue or brown? What clues does the lesson give?
  2. 02The pool is fed by a waterfall and surrounded by forest. How does the forest help keep the pool cool?
  3. 03If you could design a secret pool anywhere in nature, what would it look like and where would it be?

Classroom activity

Paint or draw Emerald Pool using only shades of green and brown โ€” no blue allowed for the water. Try to show how the green colour glows because of light coming through the leaves. Write three words underneath that describe how the pool might feel to swim in.
