What is it?

Ecuavolley is a version of volleyball invented in Ecuador and played almost exclusively there. It uses a heavier ball (about the same weight as a football), a higher net, and teams of three players instead of the standard six. It is one of the most popular sports in Ecuador and is played everywhere โ€” in stadiums, parks, school playgrounds and on street courts set up between lampposts.

Standard volleyball was brought to Ecuador in the early 20th century, but Ecuadorians adapted the rules to create their own version. The heavier ball makes the game more physical โ€” it takes real strength and skill to control. The higher net (2.85 metres for men, compared to 2.43 m in standard volleyball) means powerful jumping and spiking are essential.

Because there are only three players on each team, every player must be good at everything โ€” serving, defending, setting and attacking. In standard volleyball, players often specialise in one position. In Ecuavolley, every player must be versatile and ready for any situation.

Ecuavolley courts can be found all over the country โ€” tucked into narrow streets, set up in market squares and playing in professional indoor arenas. Weekend games in parks attract large, noisy crowds of supporters who cheer, argue about calls and celebrate great plays with enormous enthusiasm. It is a deeply social sport.

Some of Ecuador's best Ecuavolley players are celebrated as local heroes, and high-stakes matches between top players can attract large crowds and even radio or television coverage. Despite being unknown outside Ecuador, within the country Ecuavolley has a passionate following and is an important part of the national sporting identity.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Ecuavolley was invented by adapting volleyball to suit Ecuadorian tastes. Can you think of a sport you know that could be adapted to make it more interesting or fun?
  2. 02With only three players on each side, every player has to do everything. Would you prefer a sport where you specialise in one skill or one where you need to be good at everything?
  3. 03Street courts are set up between lampposts in Ecuador. Where do children in your neighbourhood play sport?

Classroom activity

Invent your own sport. Decide: How many players? What equipment (if any)? What is the goal? What are two or three key rules? Give it a name. Write out your rules on a card, then teach it to a partner and try playing it for five minutes. Discuss what worked and what you would change.
