Ala-Archa Gorge

A wild mountain valley right on Bishkek's doorstep

What is it?

Ala-Archa is a beautiful mountain gorge carved by a rushing river just 40 kilometres from Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan. People from the city can drive there in less than an hour and walk straight into wild, dramatic mountain scenery. The name means 'motley juniper' in Kyrgyz, after the colourful trees that grow on its slopes.

The gorge cuts deep into the Tien Shan mountains, and a fast, icy river โ€” also called Ala-Archa โ€” tumbles along the valley floor over boulders and through narrow rocky channels. The river is fed all summer long by melting glaciers high above, so the water is always cold and crystal clear.

The national park around the gorge is full of wildlife. Ibex โ€” mountain goats with long, curved horns โ€” pick their way along the steep rocky cliffs above the valley. Snow leopards occasionally pad through, though they are so shy that few people ever see one. Bright wildflowers cover the meadows in spring and summer.

Walking trails wind up the gorge to higher and higher meadows, and eventually to glaciers that are always covered in ice and snow. The air gets thinner and cooler as you climb, and on a clear day you can see enormous snow-capped peaks in every direction.

Many Kyrgyz families spend weekends and holidays in Ala-Archa, picnicking by the river or hiking the trails. It is a reminder that in Kyrgyzstan, wild mountain nature is never very far away, even when you live in a city.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Ala-Archa is a wild national park that you can reach from the capital city in under an hour. Does your city have wild nature close by? How does it make you feel?
  2. 02The river stays cold all summer because it is fed by glaciers. How does the ice high up in the mountains affect people and animals far below?
  3. 03Ibex can climb rocky cliffs that would be impossible for people. What special abilities do you wish you had for exploring nature?

Classroom activity

Design a 'nature trail map' for Ala-Archa. Draw the valley from above, adding the river, the pine-forested slopes, a high meadow, and a glacier at the top. Mark where you think you might spot an ibex. Add a key (legend) explaining what each symbol on your map means.
