What is it?

Providence Island is a tiny island sitting in the mouth of the Mesurado River, right next to Liberia's capital city Monrovia. It is where a group of freed American settlers first came ashore in 1822 and began to build a new community. Today it is a peaceful, green spot where you can look out across the river and imagine that very first landing.

The island is not very big — you can walk around it in about twenty minutes — but its position made it perfect for the early settlers. It was surrounded by water on all sides, which gave the new community some natural protection, and the river nearby provided fresh water and fish.

Over time, as the city of Monrovia grew on the mainland, Providence Island became quieter and quieter. Today it is mostly green and peaceful, with trees, birds and a wonderful view across the busy harbour where modern cargo ships come and go.

Visiting Providence Island is a bit like stepping back in time. It is a place where Liberians come to think about their country's beginnings and feel proud of how a small settlement grew into a whole nation. The island reminds visitors that big things often start in very small places.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Why do you think the settlers chose an island rather than the mainland to start their new community?
  2. 02What would it feel like to arrive somewhere completely new and have to build everything from scratch?
  3. 03Why is it important for countries to remember and celebrate where they came from?
  4. 04What would you name a place if you were starting a brand-new community?

Classroom activity

Draw a map of a new island settlement. Mark where you would put houses, a market, a school, a hospital and a harbour. Think carefully about why you place each building where you do, and write a label explaining your choice for each location.
