What is it?

Saint Lucia has a wonderful jazz tradition and hosts one of the most celebrated music festivals in the Caribbean — the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. Every year, world-famous jazz musicians and Caribbean artists come to perform on stages at Pigeon Island and other venues across the island, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Tell me more

Jazz is a music style that was born in the United States in the early 1900s, mixing African rhythms and harmonies with European musical forms. It spread around the world because it is an improvised art form — musicians make up or vary parts of the music as they play, which means every performance is slightly different. Jazz has inspired countless other musical styles and remains one of the most creative forms of music.

The Saint Lucia Jazz Festival began in 1992 and quickly grew into a major event. It was designed to attract high-quality musicians and celebrate both jazz and the wider culture of Saint Lucia. The festival is held in May, when the weather is beautiful, and performances take place on outdoor stages with the Caribbean Sea as a backdrop — one of the most spectacular settings for any music event in the world.

The festival has evolved over the years to include not just jazz but also soca, zouk, R&B, and other styles of Caribbean and international music. This has made it a true celebration of musical diversity. Local Saint Lucian musicians perform alongside international stars, giving homegrown talent a chance to shine on a world stage. The festival is a source of great pride for Saint Lucians.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Jazz musicians improvise — they make up parts of the music as they play. What would it feel like to create music in the moment without following a fixed script?
  2. 02The festival showcases both jazz and Caribbean music styles together. How can mixing different styles of music at one festival benefit performers and audiences?
  3. 03The festival is held outdoors by the sea. How do you think a beautiful setting changes the experience of listening to music?

Classroom activity

Listen to a short piece of jazz music and a short piece of soca with your teacher. Create a comparison chart: tempo (speed), instruments heard, mood, and whether the music follows a set pattern or varies. Then vote as a class on which you would most like to hear performed live at an outdoor Caribbean festival.
