What is it?

The Borneo pygmy elephant is the smallest elephant species in the world. Even though they are called 'pygmy', adults are still taller than a grown-up human โ€” they are just smaller than other elephant types. They are also known for being unusually gentle and peaceful.

Tell me more

Borneo pygmy elephants live in lowland rainforests and river valleys, including some areas of Brunei. They are round-faced and have bigger ears relative to their body than most elephants, giving them an endearingly baby-like look even when fully grown. Their trunks are long and flexible, perfect for grabbing leaves and fruit from the forest floor.

These elephants are very social animals, travelling together in tight family herds led by the eldest female. They spend their days walking slowly through the forest, eating enormous quantities of plants โ€” an adult can eat up to 150 kg of food in a single day! They also love to cool off by bathing and splashing in rivers.

Because so much of Borneo's forest has been cleared for farming and plantations, pygmy elephants sometimes wander into villages and farms looking for food. Conservation groups now work with local communities to help elephants and people share the landscape peacefully โ€” using GPS collars to track where the herds are travelling.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Pygmy elephants sometimes walk into villages because their forest has shrunk. How could people and elephants share space more peacefully?
  2. 02Scientists use GPS collars to track the elephants. How do you think that information helps protect them?
  3. 03The herd is led by the oldest female elephant. Do you know any other animals where females lead the group?

Classroom activity

Imagine you are a conservation ranger tracking a family of pygmy elephants through Borneo. Draw a simple map of their route through the forest, river, and farmland. Mark the places where they find food, water, and safe sleeping spots. Write a ranger's diary entry for one day.
