What is it?

Hari Kebangsaan means 'National Day' in Malay. Brunei celebrates it every year on the 23rd of February to mark the anniversary of becoming a fully independent nation in 1984. The day is filled with parades, performances, fireworks, traditional music, and celebrations that involve people from every part of the country.

The main Hari Kebangsaan celebrations take place at the large stadium in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Thousands of people fill the stands and watch an impressive parade with marching bands, military formations, colourful floats, and performers in traditional costume from Brunei's different communities. The national flag is raised ceremonially to cheers from the crowd.

Schools play a very important part in the National Day celebrations. Students practise for weeks before the event, learning drill formations, traditional dances, and coordinated flag displays to perform in front of the whole nation. Being selected to participate in the official parade is considered a great honour for students and their schools.

In the evenings, fireworks light up the sky above Brunei Bay, and families gather to watch together. Streets are decorated with flags and lights in yellow, white, and black โ€” the national colours. Food stalls open late, music plays in the parks, and the whole country takes time to feel proud of everything that makes Brunei unique.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01National Day celebrates a country's independence. Does your country have a similar day? How do people celebrate it?
  2. 02Students practise for weeks to be part of the parade. What does it mean to work hard for something that is bigger than just yourself?
  3. 03National colours and flags represent a whole country. If you were designing a flag for your school, what colours and symbols would you choose โ€” and why?

Classroom activity

Design a National Day float! Imagine you are designing a parade float for Brunei's Hari Kebangsaan. On a large piece of paper, draw your float from the side. Include at least three symbols or scenes that celebrate something wonderful about Brunei โ€” using things you have learned in these lessons. Give your float a name and write a short speech (three sentences) to be read aloud as it passes.
