What is it?

The proboscis monkey is one of the most unusual-looking primates on the planet. Males have a very long, droopy nose โ€” so big it flops down over their mouth and jiggles when they move. These remarkable monkeys live in Borneo's mangrove forests and riverbanks, including those in Brunei.

No one is quite sure exactly why male proboscis monkeys have such enormous noses, but scientists think it helps make their calls louder and more impressive. When a male wants to warn rivals or impress females, he makes a loud honking sound through that wobbly nose โ€” it can carry a long way through the forest.

Proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers, which is unusual for primates. They leap from tree branches straight into rivers and swim with a doggy-paddle style, using their slightly webbed feet. They can even swim underwater for short stretches to avoid crocodiles โ€” they make a huge splash as they plunge in from great heights.

Their favourite food is unripe leaves, fruit, and seeds found in mangrove and riverine forests. The leaves are hard for many animals to digest, but proboscis monkeys have special multi-chambered stomachs โ€” a bit like cows โ€” that can break them down. Groups of monkeys sleep in trees right on the riverbank, so they are easy to spot from a slow boat at dusk.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01The big nose might help make calls louder. Can you think of other animals that have unusual body parts for communicating?
  2. 02Proboscis monkeys swim to escape danger. What unusual skill does your favourite animal have for staying safe?
  3. 03These monkeys only live on Borneo. Why might it be important to protect one specific island's forest?
  4. 04If you could invent an animal, what unusual feature would you give it, and what would it be used for?

Classroom activity

Make a 'Monkey Fact File' poster. Draw a large proboscis monkey and label five of its special features (big nose, webbed feet, multi-chambered stomach, long arms for swinging, reddish-brown fur). Write one sentence under each label explaining what the feature is for.
