What is it?

Negril's Seven Mile Beach is a long, gentle strip of white sand on the western tip of Jamaica. The sea here is warm, calm, and a brilliant shade of turquoise. It is called Seven Mile Beach because โ€” as you might have guessed โ€” it stretches for roughly seven miles (about 11 kilometres) in a soft, sweeping curve.

The water is so clear that you can see the sandy bottom even when it is quite deep. Colourful fish dart around the coral close to shore, and it is a favourite spot for snorkelling. Children often spend hours in the shallows catching tiny waves with their hands.

Negril sits on the far west end of Jamaica, which means it has some of the best sunsets in the country. The sky turns every shade of orange, pink and purple as the sun drops into the sea โ€” locals and visitors gather on the beach to watch it together every evening.

Tall coconut palms lean over the sand, and vendors walk the beach selling fresh coconut water โ€” they chop the top off right in front of you and hand it over with a straw. It is perfectly chilled by the breeze and the shade of the palm.

The beach is split into two sections by a rocky headland called Negril Point, where a lighthouse stands. The reef just offshore protects the water, keeping it calm enough for small children and strong swimmers alike.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Seven miles of beach โ€” how far is seven miles from where you are sitting right now? Could you walk it in a day?
  2. 02The sea near Negril is protected by a reef. How does a coral reef act like a shield for the beach behind it?
  3. 03If you could design your perfect beach day, what would it include? Compare your idea with a partner.

Classroom activity

On a world map or globe, find Jamaica and point to the western tip where Negril is. Then find your own country. Measure (roughly) how far apart they are. Write three things that might be different about a day at Negril beach compared to a day at a beach or lake near you.
