What is it?

Song-Köl is a wide, shallow lake sitting on a high plateau in the middle of Kyrgyzstan, more than 3,000 metres above sea level. Every summer, Kyrgyz herding families move up to the grasslands around the lake with their horses and sheep, and set up round felt tents called yurts. In winter, the lake freezes completely and heavy snow covers the land.

The plateau around Song-Köl is one of the most beautiful places in Kyrgyzstan. Bright green grass stretches from the shore of the lake all the way to the rocky ridges at the edge of the plateau, and the sky above is enormous and very blue. You can walk for hours without seeing a road or a building — only yurts, horses, and the open sky.

A yurt is a traditional round tent made from a wooden frame covered with felt, which is thick wool pressed flat. They are quick to put up and take down, which is perfect for families who move with the seasons. Inside, colourful rugs and cushions cover the floor, and a small stove in the centre keeps everyone warm even when the night is cold.

Visitors from all over the world now come to Song-Köl in summer to stay in the yurts, ride horses across the plateau, and sleep under skies full of stars. Because the plateau is so high and far from any city, there is almost no light pollution at night — the Milky Way is clearly visible as a bright band across the sky.

The lake itself is home to many birds, including ducks, geese and cranes that stop here on their long migrations between warmer countries. Fish called Issyk-Kul chebak swim in the cold water.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Nomadic families move their homes with the seasons. How is this different from how you live? What might be fun about it? What would be hard?
  2. 02A yurt is designed to be put up and taken down quickly. What do you think are the cleverest design features of a home that moves?
  3. 03Song-Köl is so far from cities that you can see the Milky Way. Have you ever been somewhere dark enough to see lots of stars? How did it feel?
  4. 04Birds stop at Song-Köl during their migration journeys. Where do you think they are going? Why might they choose this high lake to rest?

Classroom activity

Design your own yurt. First draw the circular floor plan from above, showing where the door, the central stove, and the sleeping and sitting areas are. Then draw the outside of the yurt — include the decorated felt panels and the wooden door. Finally, give your yurt a name and decide what colourful patterns you would put on the inside rugs.
