What is it?

Riga is the capital city of Latvia, and its Old Town is one of the most beautiful city centres in all of Europe. The streets are paved with cobblestones, the buildings are painted in bright colours, and there are church towers so tall you can see them from far away. UNESCO โ€” a group that protects special places around the world โ€” decided that Riga's Old Town is so important it must be kept safe for all future children to enjoy.

Tell me more

The Old Town of Riga has been there for over 800 years. Back then, Riga was a busy trading city and merchants came from all over Europe to buy and sell things. Many of the buildings they built are still standing today, which is why the streets feel a little bit like stepping back in time.

One of the most famous sights is the three medieval towers called the Three Brothers โ€” three houses standing shoulder to shoulder that are thought to be the oldest houses in the city. Each one was built in a slightly different style, as if three different builders each had their own idea.

Riga is also famous for Art Nouveau buildings โ€” grand, curvy houses decorated with sculpted faces, plants and patterns. There are more Art Nouveau buildings here than almost anywhere else in the world. Walking around the streets is like reading a picture book made of stone.

Right in the middle of the Old Town is a big market square where people still meet to buy flowers, vegetables and handmade crafts. On special days the square fills with music, lanterns and the smell of warm food.

  3. 03What would it feel like to walk down a street that is 800 years old?

Classroom activity

Design your own 'protected street'. Draw three buildings side by side, each in a different style โ€” like the Three Brothers. Give each one a name and write one sentence explaining why it should be kept safe forever.
