What is it?

The Lake of Stars festival is one of Africa's most celebrated music events, held each year on the shores of Lake Malawi. Musicians from Malawi and around the world come to perform, and thousands of fans arrive to enjoy the music, the lake sunsets and the warm Malawian atmosphere. The festival takes its name from the dazzling stars reflected in the lake at night.

Tell me more

The festival started in 2004 and quickly grew from a small local event into an internationally recognised celebration. Stages are set up right on the beach, and at night the music plays while the moon and stars glitter on the surface of the enormous lake behind the performers. It is one of the most beautiful settings for a concert anywhere in the world.

The music is a fantastic mix — Malawian traditional sounds, Afrobeat, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and electronic music all share the same stages across the festival weekend. Local Malawian artists get a platform to share their music with international audiences, and world-famous acts bring their sounds to Malawi for the first time.

Beyond the music, the Lake of Stars festival celebrates Malawian food, crafts and culture. Stalls sell grilled chambo and nsima, local artisans display their work, and children's activities run throughout the day. The whole event feels like a giant community celebration that happens to have some incredible live music in the middle of it.

The festival has also worked on environmental projects, including beach clean-ups and awareness campaigns about protecting the lake. Bringing people together around something as joyful as music is a powerful way to build shared pride in the natural environment.

Classroom activity

Plan your own classroom 'mini festival'. Choose three different types of music you would feature, design a simple poster, and write a short programme describing each act. What food stalls would you have?
