What is it?

The fennec fox is the world's smallest fox, and it lives in the Sahara Desert in Mauritania and across North Africa. Its most striking feature is its enormous ears โ€” each one as big as its whole face โ€” which it uses to hear insects and lizards moving under the sand. Despite the scorching heat, the fennec thrives in the desert with some very clever tricks.

A fennec fox is only about the size of a large kitten, weighing less than 1.5 kilograms. But those ears are extraordinary โ€” they can be up to 15 cm long and act like satellite dishes, picking up the tiniest sounds. They also radiate heat away from the body, helping the fox stay cool without sweating.

Fennec foxes are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the hottest part of the day in underground burrows and come out at night to hunt. Their thick, soft, cream-coloured fur keeps them warm during cold desert nights. The fur on the soles of their paws acts like shoes, protecting them from burning sand.

They eat insects, small lizards, rodents, eggs, and berries. Most impressively, they can survive without drinking water directly โ€” they get all the moisture they need from their food. This makes them perfectly adapted to places where there are no streams or puddles for kilometres around.

Fennec foxes are very playful and live in small family groups. They communicate with a range of barks, purrs, and squeaks. Their call at night โ€” a kind of chattering yip โ€” is one of the sounds that makes the Saharan night feel alive.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01How do the fennec fox's big ears help it survive in the desert in two different ways? Can you name both?
  2. 02Why might it be useful to be small if you live in a very hot place with not much food?
  3. 03The fennec gets water from food instead of drinking. Can you think of any other animals that do this?

Classroom activity

Design a desert animal. Draw your creature and give it at least three special body features that help it survive in the heat. For each feature, write a sentence explaining exactly how it helps. Share your designs and vote for the most inventive desert survival trick.
