What is it?

Qatar National Day is celebrated on 18 December every year. The whole country marks the day with parades, fireworks, traditional performances, and a huge camel parade through the capital. It is a day when Qataris wear traditional clothing, fly the national flag everywhere, and celebrate together as one community.

The camel parade is one of the most spectacular parts of National Day. Hundreds of camels, decorated with colourful embroidered rugs and ornaments, walk through Doha while proud owners and handlers march alongside. Some camels are groomed for months in advance, their fur carefully trimmed into patterns.

Alongside the camels, there are magnificent horse displays. Riders perform traditional equestrian tricks, galloping in formation and showing off skills passed down through generations. The ardha sword dance – where men in traditional dress move in lines while singing and carrying swords – is also performed, a powerful reminder of Qatar's heritage.

Every neighbourhood in Qatar celebrates. Families drive around in cars decorated with Qatari flags and bunting in the national colours of maroon and white. In the evening, fireworks light up the sky over Doha's skyline. It is a joyful, colourful, proud day – a bit like a birthday party for the whole country.

Classroom activity

Design a National Day float for Qatar: draw a vehicle or platform decorated with Qatari symbols (camel, oryx, falcon, maroon and white flag). Label each symbol and explain what it represents. Display the designs as a class gallery.
