What is it?

Tafelberg is a dramatic flat-topped mountain, called a 'tepui', rising 1,026 metres above the Suriname rainforest. Its name simply means 'Table Mountain' in Dutch, and when you see it you understand why β€” the summit looks like someone sliced the top perfectly flat. The plateau on top is so cut off from the forest below that it has its own unique plants found nowhere else on Earth.

Tell me more

Tepuis are ancient rock formations found in northern South America. Because the top of Tafelberg has been separated from the surrounding forest for millions of years, plants and animals that live up there have evolved in their own special direction. Scientists have discovered rare orchids, sundew plants that catch insects, and tiny frogs on the summit that cannot be found anywhere else.

Getting to Tafelberg is not easy β€” there are no roads, and the only access is by small aircraft or a very long journey by river and foot. That difficulty has kept it one of the most pristine wild places in Suriname. Scientists who do make the journey often return with new species they have never seen before.

The landscape on top feels almost like another world. Mist drifts across the flat summit, the rock is covered in mosses and tiny plants, and the views down into the rainforest below are breathtaking. For the Trio indigenous people, Tafelberg is a sacred and deeply important place.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Because Tafelberg's top is separated from the forest, animals there evolved differently. Can you think of other places on Earth where being cut off created something unique?
  2. 02Scientists sometimes find brand-new species at Tafelberg. How do you think it feels to discover a creature no one has ever seen before?
  3. 03The Trio people consider Tafelberg sacred. Why might a mountain or a special natural place feel important to a community?

Classroom activity

Design your own 'lost world' on top of a flat-topped mountain. Draw a map from above and add at least four made-up animals or plants that have evolved specially for that environment. For each one, write one sentence explaining how it is adapted to life up there.
