What is it?

The Seven Lakes of Marguzor are a chain of seven beautiful lakes hidden in a valley in the Fann Mountains. Each lake is a slightly different colour โ€” some are turquoise, some deep green, some almost white โ€” depending on the minerals in the water and the light. Together they look like a sparkling necklace of jewels laid across the mountain.

The seven lakes are connected by a river that flows from one into the next, like steps going down a staircase. Hikers walk along a path beside the river to visit each lake in turn. Local people use Tajik names for each one โ€” names like Soya (Shadow), Gushor (Earring) and Marguzor (Pearl Place), which hint at how beautiful the valley is.

The lakes are surrounded by dramatic cliffs and gentle apricot orchards. In spring, when the snow melts and the orchards blossom pink and white, the valley smells wonderful. Small villages dot the lower part of the valley and local families have welcomed visitors for generations.

Because the mineral content changes from lake to lake, each one has a slightly different shade. Sunlight also makes a huge difference โ€” the same lake can look sky-blue in the morning and deep emerald in the afternoon. Photographers come from all over the world to try to capture every colour.

Discussion prompts

  1. 01Why might minerals in water make it look different colours? Can you think of other things that change colour depending on what's in them?
  2. 02If each lake had a name describing its colour or feeling, what name would you give each of the seven?
  3. 03Why do you think people have lived in beautiful valleys like this for thousands of years?

Classroom activity

Give each child seven small circles cut from white paper. Using watercolour or coloured pencils, mix and paint a different shade of blue or green on each circle โ€” trying to make each one subtly different. Arrange them in a line to make your own 'necklace of lakes'. Label each one with an invented name inspired by its colour.
